Introductory Icelandic Language and Culture
Introduces both the spoken and the written language, with conversational proficiency as the primary goal. The course emphasizes grammar, oral expression, and listening comprehension, and is designed to give beginning students a practical command of the language. Upon completion of this course, you can expect to be able to speak in a present and a future tense, to have enough vocabulary (500 to 1,000 words) to participate in basic everyday conversation, and to be able to read and write a simple letter.
Icelandic Langauge and Culture Level 1
The first course covers the alphabet and phonetics differences in Icelandic, going through the basics of grammar and vocabulary. We will cover personal pronouns, contractions, question words, gendered nouns, prepositions and adjectives as well as starting to go over verbs and their conjugation. The course will cover the first 8 chapters of the first textbook as well as some extra material on grammar.
At the end, students should be able to pronounce written Icelandic and greet and be able to have some small talk with natives.
Icelandic Langauge and Culture Level 2
This part will go into more detail on verbs and nouns, we'll cover noun cases, verbs in subjunctive mood, vowel shifts, adverbs and continue with prepositions.
This course will cover the two last chapters in book 1 and continue through chapter 4 in the second.
At the end of this course, students should be able to order food, describe objects, give directions and ask questions.
Icelandic Langauge and Culture Level 3
The third course will have an emphasis on speaking and interacting in a more direct way, covering imperative verbs, compound sentences, using verb tenses and other inflections. This part will cover the rest of book 2.
At the end of this course, students should be able to have light conversations with native speakers and should be gaining the ability to infer meaning of vocabulary from context.
Icelandic Langauge and Culture Level 4
Course four will focus on more irregular verb and noun forms, strong vs. weak verbs. We'll cover the differences in talking about feelings and mood versus tangible things. The course will go through all of book 3.
At the end of this level, students should be able to be self-sufficient in stores, be able to read children's books and to speak to natives with little help from english.
Icelandic Langauge and Culture Level 5
The fifth course will be focused on vocabulary and finessing grammar taught in the previous courses. There will be a little more focus on cadance and pronunciation of consonants to get closer to fluent speech. This will be done while going through book 4. At the end, students should be able to read simple literature, speak to natives about most subjects and have normal interactions in Icelandic.
Since communication in a foreign language requires an understanding of the cultural context, our aim is to teach you the living language through carefully selected textbooks, newspaper and magazine articles and other relevant materials, rather than have you repeat and memorize tourist phrases.
The books used are Íslenska fyrir alla, 1-4, by Sólborg Jónsdóttir og Þorbjörg Halldórsdóttir. They are freely available to print for classroom use under a Creative Commons licence, but can also be bought already printed from Iceland. They focus on all aspects of language learning at once, reading, writing, comprehension and speaking and have a steady increase in difficulty. They are written to follow and support the suggested curriculum of Icelandic as a Foreign Language, as set by the Icelandic Ministry of Education.
Tuition
Tuition for the Icelandic group program is $499. There is a non-refundable $35 registration fee for first-time students only. Please note that the fee structure is different for private classes.

Private instruction offers students an opportunity to work one-on-one with an instructor at their own pace. The instructor carefully selects materials and plans lessons to effectively meet the student's goals and individual learning style.
Private programs offer a flexible schedule and a customized curriculum. A minimum of 20 hours of instruction with one or two classes (each 90 or 120 minutes) per week is the suggested module, but dates, times and content can be arranged according to your requirement.
Immersion programs are designed to teach the equivalent of levels 1 to 5 of the Institute's regular core programs in one 6-week or 4-week, 90-hour sessions. Classes meet Monday through Friday, 3 hours a day in 6-week programs/4.5 hours a day in 4-week programs).
The main goal of these programs, which meet in small classes of 4 to 12, is to help students, from day one, to increase confidence in their ability to use their new language in a wide range of real-life situations and improve their oral skills as they progress from level to level.
